Measuring your dog’s neck (important before you buy) For the martingale collar and half check collar, just measure your dog’s neck size and choose the size from the size list. Take a material tape measure and put it around the dog’s neck where the collar will sit. Take a snug measurement and choose the size accordingly. Example: Dogs neck size is 17 inches, chose 16 -18 inch collar size. Don’t worry about the chain as we just need the actual neck size to make the collar. We check every dog collar for accuracy before it leaves, so there should be no need to query that you have the correct size unless it has been measured incorrectly or you guessed which size to buy. This collar must be fitted correctly. The size of the neck must correspond to the size of the collar with the O rings touching – the circle chain is not part of the dogs’ neck size. Take a measuring tape and measure the dog’s neck at the point where the collar will sit. More about the half check dog collar A half check dog collar, also known as a half choke/choker collar, martingale collar or limited slip collar, is a type of collar commonly used for dogs. It is designed to provide more control over the dog without choking or causing discomfort. When the dog pulls or tries to back out of the collar, the tension on the leash causes the collar to tighten slightly. The collar is designed to provide a limited amount of tightening unlike a full choke chain which this is not, creating a snug fit without choking the dog. This tightening action helps prevent the dog from slipping out of the collar and provides better control during walks or training sessions, assuming it is fitted correctly. It is important to note that the proper fit of a half check collar is crucial. When adjusted correctly, it should fit comfortably around the dog’s neck without being too loose or too tight. By the nature of its’ design, this collar will hang loose. While a half check collar can be an effective tool for training and control, it should be used with care and under supervision. It is not recommended to leave a dog unattended with a half check collar on, as there is a possibility of the collar becoming tangled or caught on objects. Always consult with a professional dog trainer or behaviorist to determine if a half check collar is appropriate for your dog and to learn proper usage and training techniques. Why a Half Check dog collar? This collar has a particular elegance about it. With a good choice of colour, matched with the nickel (or brass by special order) martingale chains also called circle chains, these collars will guarantee to set your dogs’ style way above that of a standard dog collar. A personal favourite of mine is the bridle leather variety of martingale collar, the black or navy with brass or the red with nickel chain. Keeping the chain clean You may wash the martingale chain in soapy water, but make sure it is dried thoroughly to prevent any further surface oxidisation. Should your dogs’ neck become black from the chain, then treat them to a bath. Safety We don’t recommend these collars for dogs who jump up, jump over things or if you have buckets of water. Chains get caught and it has happened to my dogs. These collars are safe as long as you use them responsibly.
